LOCK ALERT *** RATES CONTINUE TO WORSEN***
The Fed surprised analysts and investors by raising its discount rate, which is what banks pay to borrow directly from the Fed, to 0.75% yesterday. The move is largely symbolic since it doesn;t affect rates paid by consumers, however, the symbolism was not lost on markets — jittery investors fles fixed income investments on inflationary concerns — this decreases bond prices and increases mortgage interest rates.

The National Association of Realtors has put together a proposal for converting Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into government-owned non-profit agencies, a move the industry trade group feels is essential to keeping the lowest mortgage rates available to most American home buyers.
